Digital innovation and co-creation in the museum

Establishing collaborative approaches in the development of a new type of digital collection access for the Museum Rietberg of the City of Zurich

The research project "Digital Innovation and Co-Creation in the Museum" examines principles of co-creation for the sustainable establishment of a collaborative innovation process at the Museum Rietberg of the City of Zurich along the development of a novel tool for digital collection access.

The Museum Rietberg of the City of Zurich is one of the largest art museums in Switzerland. It is dedicated to the art of the traditional and contemporary cultures of Asia, Africa, America and Oceania. The collection of 23,000 objects and 37,000 photographs is largely made accessible to the public in the museum rooms and the show depot.

Within the framework of the ten-month research project, a research team from the ZHdK Strategic Design together with representatives from the Museum Rietberg investigated how digital innovation around the museum visit can be specifically promoted and how visitors in particular can be increasingly integrated into the development process using co-creation methods.

Building on design thinking workshops and in close exchange with different target and stakeholder groups, the focus was on developing a tool for conversation-based access to a specific group of works. Around the three identified key themes of "creating experiences", "entering into dialogue" and "facilitating exchange", novel approaches were tested in experimental settings and specifically further developed in in-depth design sprints.
