Research Clusters

The Global Design cluster is dedicated to global interdependence in the field of design. To this end, it brings together interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches from design studies, history, social and cultural sciences, and postcolonial studies.

Global Design is based on an expanded concept of design. It understands design as a fundamental socio-aesthetic practice that plays a central role in all social, political and cultural contexts. Against this backdrop, previously marginalised design traditions and contemporary design practices of the ‘Majority World’ are analysed. One focus is on (post-)colonial infrastructures and transculturalisation processes.

Design practice in the Global Design cluster includes, among other things, the creative and experimental exploration of ‘pluriverse’ aesthetics and design forms, participatory action research with various communities, and the design of exhibitions and other communication formats. Instead of clear-cut design solutions, the focus is on the creative handling of multiperspectivity and ambivalence.
