Visual Communication

The publication builds on the 2022 conference Counterparts: Exploring Design Beyond the Human convened by Swiss Design Network and hosted by Zurich University of the Arts. Bringing together contributions from various disciplines, it expands discussions on post-anthropocentric design, ecological ethics, and multispecies relations. Thus, the project explores how design can respond to planetary crises through relational, critical, and transformative practices, and reflects on its role in shaping more-than-human futures.

This publication gathers fifteen interdisciplinary contributions that explore how design can engage more meaningfully with ecological, cultural, and ethical challenges. Drawing on environmental humanities, posthumanism, and post-anthropocentric design, the volume examines multispecies relations, ecological ethics, material legacies, and alternative ways of knowing and researching. Through essays and studies, it presents design as a relational, critical and transformative practice capable of shaping more-than-human futures. The publication aims to strengthen international design discourse and expand post-anthropocentric perspectives within design research and education.
