“Circulations: Mapping the life biographies of Benin Bronzes in Swiss museums”

Research set-up project

Caroline Feder, Research assistant, Cast/Audiovisual Media

This project sought to develop various mechanisms by which to communicate the results of a 18 month research projects on the provenance of Benin cultural heritage in Swiss public museums. As such it plugged into an existing network of Museums called the Swiss Benin Initiative (BIS). How can museums improve their outreach when communicating problematic and at times complex provenance data on contested collections? We benchmarked current practices, exhibition formats and digital storytelling tools currently dealing with this. We then developed, based on specific Benin objects, visual narratives that explored various alternatives to display provenance data.
