«Brain-Buddy» – Increased Head Safety in Junior Ice Hockey

Research set-up project

Lukas Grauwiler, Alumna BA 24, Industrial Design, Health Design

«Brain-Buddy» is an innovative LED warning system designed to protect junior ice hockey players from dangerous collisions. Through light stimuli, it trains perception and reaction skills to recognize hazardous situations early on. Based on specific light frequencies and colors, it enhances safety on the ice. With precise sensors and practical testing involving juniors from the GCK/ZSC Lions youth organization, the system is continuously optimized to promote long-term health and safety in youth sports.

«Brain-Buddy» is a specially designed LED warning system that enhances safety on the ice in junior ice hockey. It addresses the risk of collisions, which often lead to severe head injuries such as concussions. The system uses light stimuli in specific frequencies and colors (red, blue, green, etc.) to alert players to potentially dangerous situations early on. In addition to its warning function, it specifically trains players' perception and reaction skills. «Brain-Buddy» is continuously being developed, including precise sensors and optimized settings. Practical tests with junior teams from the GCK/ZSC Lions youth organization ensure its applicability and effectiveness. In the long term, «Brain-Buddy» aims to establish itself as an indispensable safety tool not only in ice hockey but also in other contact sports.
